Federal 62 gr TBBC This is .223 Federal LE Tactical Bonded 62gr Soft Point Ammo LE223T3. Considered by most experts to be the best .223 "barrier blind" round. The Tactical Bonded Rifle Ammunition is another Federal product made exclusively for law enforcement. It achieves accuracy and terminal performance unmatched by any other ammunition. Designed to defeat the toughest barriers with minimal deflection or deviation for the most intense situations, Tactical Bonded has quickly become the choice for some of the most intense conditions. Recent production. This ammo is packed in 20rd. boxes, 10 boxes to a factory-sealed case.

This bonded JSP round is designed not to fragment. Its strength lies in its ability to penetrate barriers including windshields and walls with minimal deflection or deviation, and then deeply penetrate and expand in tissue located well behind the barrier.

"However in the wake of the serious terminal performance failures by non-bonded .223 64 gr JSP's due to inadequate penetration into the criminal's Toyota Tundra truck in the July 2010 CHP OIS incident in Oakland, quite a few agencies here have been switching to general issue of Barrier Blind loads like the 55 & 64 gr Gold Dot loads, along with the 55 & 62 gr TBBC loads that previously saw more limited use." 5.56mm Duty Loads by Dr. Gary Roberts in pistol-forums.com

"One of the large full time SWAT teams here uses...62 gr Fed Tac bonded JSP (LE223T3) for barriers" Dr. Gary Roberts

"For urban LE use, I've carried the Hornady 75 gr OTM in 30 rd mags and a few 20 rd mags of Federal Tactical 62 gr JSP for barrier situations." Dr. Gary Roberts

Per Dr. Gary Roberts on the Tactical Forums in 2001: "The ONLY .223 load we shot which offered adequate penetration after shooting through automobile windshields was the Federal 62 gr Tactical (LE223T3). The trade off is that the Federal Tactical does not fragment, maintains the deepest penetration of any .223 bullet after penetrating walls, and as a result, may not be the best choice for entry or urban settings." Topic: Question for DocGKR

"Most other acceptable LE barrier blind loadings are at .223 pressures, including the .223 55 & 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical loads (LE223T1 & LE223T3)..." 5.56 mm Duty Loads" by Dr. Gary Roberts in pistol-forums.com

"For LE Patrol use, where there is a high incidence of potential engagements around or involving vehicles, ammunition that is able to effectively penetrate intermediate barriers, particularly vehicle glass is critical. The best LE 5.56 mm/.223 loads for intermediate barrier penetration are the 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical (LE223T3) and the similarly performing 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load (Tactical--LE223T1 or identical Premium Rifle--P223T2)." Dr. Gary Roberts

If routinely engaging vehicles, the only LE .223 loads which effectively penetrate automobiles are the 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical (LE223T3) and the similarly performing 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load. While not bad choices, neither the new Hornady 60 gr “barrier penetration” JSP nor the 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP bullets were quite as effective as the proven Trophy Bonded Bear Claws against glass in our testing. None of the OTM bullets, even the heavy 75 - 100 gr loads, offer good performance through automobile glass. FWIW, contrary to what many believe, 62 gr M855 FMJ also is not very good against glass. For military use, the M995 AP is the best choice for vehicles and glass. Dr. Gary Roberts

"Personally, if there is a high incidence of potential engagements around or involving vehicles I'd stick with the the 55 & 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical loads (LE223T1 & LE223T3) , along with the Nosler 60 gr Partition JSP, Remington 62 gr bonded JSP, Speer 55 & 64 gr Gold Dot JSP's ( and identically constructed Federal 62 gr Fusion JSP), Swift 75 gr Scirrocco PT, or loads using the Barnes all copper TSX bullets (the 55 gr TSX is optimal for LE use)." Dr. Gary Roberts

Also stated by Dr. Roberts: "The Federal 62 gr JSP Tactical (LE223T3) and Hornady 75 gr TAP are the only .223 bullets which we have tested which exhibit adequate terminal performance when fired out of barrel lengths shorter than 14.5 inches, however, effective engagement distance is limited compared to longer barrels." Topic: Question for DocGKR

"Federal's LE223T3 loading is actually FASTER than Winchester's RA556B 5.56 loading (LE223T3 is typically 1-200fps hotter. Even though RA556B is 5.56 pressure, and LE223T3 is .223 pressure, and they are within 2gr projectile weight of each other)." Pistol-forum.com

"Which COTS (commercial off-the-shelf FMJ) ammunition is closest in performance to SOST?"
"Federal Tactical 55 gr LE223T1 and 62 gr LE223T3 bonded JSP's using the TBBC bulets..." Dr. Gary Roberts on Lightfighter.net

"They are probably using the Federal 62 gr Tactical (LE223T3) that uses the TBBC bonded JSP; there are numerous OIS incidents using this load. It is especially effective against targets behind intermediate barriers and it is also a good choice with shorter 10-12" barrel lengths." Dr. Gary Roberts

If running 1/12 twist barrels, stick with the Federal 55 gr TBBC rather than this round, the 62 gr TBBC. However:

"We have been using that load for a year or two, and have also noted that it works accurately with no stability issues in a variety of twist rates and lengths, particularly stuff from 11.5" to 20, with rates including 1:7, 1:9 and 1:12. The Federal rep said that they were not suprised because, while the weight of the projectile is 62 grains, the actual length is about the same as a 55-grain ball, and it is the longer length of M855 that requires the faster twist. Regardless of the "why," it stays accurate through all of our systems and exhibits no sign of keyholing at distance, even through some truly ancient full-sized M16s (in fact, it shot the best groups through those during testing)."
