The
armor-piercing SS190 load was developed for military and law
enforcement use, and always been restricted and have never been
available for sale to civilians. It is shipped from a U.S. Customs
controlled warehouse only to military and law enforcement agencies. Shooting Times
In
2004, the SS192 hollow-point cartridge was introduced to civilian
shooters along with the new IOM variant of the Five-seven pistol. The 28 grain hollow-point SS192 is designed to tumble after a few inches of penetration and not expand like a typical hollow-point bullet. It has a copper-jacketed bullet with an aluminum rather than a steel core. It was classified by the ATF as not armor piercing. It can and does penetrate Level IIA Kevlar soft body armor, but does not penetrate a Level IIIA vest when fired from the Five-seven. In spite of not being classified as an AP round, the SS192 variety was voluntarily discontinued by FN in late 2004 as a result of political pressure by the Brady Campaign.
In 2005 the
SS196SR variety was introduced using a 2.6 g (40 grain) Hornady V-Max
projectile. The SS196 was also quickly discontinued in favor of the
newer SS195LF and SS197SR varieties, which are currently offered to
civilian shooters for use in 5.7×28mm firearms, followed by the SS198LF
variety, which is currently produced but is restricted by FN to
military and law enforcement customers. The SS195LF is the successor to the discontinued SS192 using the same 27gr HP aluminum core bullet but with a lead free primer. SS192 does not have a lead free primer, and therefore has a longer shelf life than SS195LF and SS198LF.
